Blue and yellow cupcakes with baby shower candlesBaby showers have become a popular fixture in the pregnancy calendar. Not only are they a great way to pamper the mum-to-be, they’re also an ideal opportunity to bring together family and friends before a new baby arrives.

Here are some lovely ideas we’ve discovered and some we’ve used ourselves to make baby showers fun and special:

Decorations

Attach maternity towels to some string and use them as bunting – this idea looks cuter than it might sound. Write a good luck message across the bunting in different coloured pens.

Have a pink or blue theme depending on what the mum-to-be is expecting, or yellow if bump’s gender is still under wraps. Accessorise your party with coloured plates, cups and cutlery.

Food

If you’re going for a traditional ‘ladies only’ do, why not indulge in afternoon tea? You can book a table at a café or hotel, or throw a tea party in your own home. If you are opting to self-cater why not suggest that each guest brings some cakes to share the baking burden.

There’s some fantastic ideas for cake decorations on Pinterest.

If you are opting for a family get-together a barbecue is ideal. The men will be in their element looking after the burgers and sausages. Meanwhile the ladies can whip up some mocktails. We love these non-alcoholic cocktail tips from A Beautiful Mess.

Games

Here are some baby shower game ideas that everyone will enjoy:

Have a competition to guess the birth weight of the baby. Draw up a grid and ask all the guests to make a prediction. It’s a great conversation starter.

Ask guests to bring a photo of themselves as a baby and play guess who.

Or how about some baby themed word games? We love these baby shower games from Frugal Fanatic, and they are free to download and print!

Gifts

Clothes are a great gift as new babies can go through several outfits a day. However, remember that by the time they get to wear your beautiful gift the season may have changed and it could be too hot or cold. The safest option is to give infant wardrobe staples like vests and baby grows.

If you are looking for something a bit different, why not opt for the Tiddley Pom Organic Baby Massage Experience gift set. It’s something that both the new parents and baby can enjoy together. Find out more about baby massage.
